IT Assistant / Customer Service

Kobes Nurseries located in Durham region east of Oshawa has been a family owned and operated business for more than 50 years. Noted for its quality, service and supplying the landscape industry with ornamental nursery stock. At Kobes Nurseries we offer a challenging, fun, flexible and fast paced environment with a competitive salary and benefits package.

Description

This is a very unique job that requires an individual that is flexible, an excellent multi-tasker, cool under pressure and truly embraces an environment where they will be expected to troubleshoot and problem solve with enthusiasm!

This job will require learning basic nursery/plant specific knowledge. As this industry does have a learning curve, be prepared and willing to put in the time in order to build a solid foundation to grow on.

The main aspect of this role is a technical one, you will be helping the current IT admin as both a team member assisting in IT related tasks but also as a backup to the IT admin.

This cannot be stressed enough, if you are a nerd that likes to sit at their desk and only ever interact with your screen, this is not the job for you. Our nerd needs to wear a cape, have a great sense of humour (you WILL need it at times) and be willing to go above and beyond to assist their co-workers. The co-workers are awesome, but technology is not their passion, plants are!

Technical Knowledge

We appreciate this is a tricky list as there is a LOT of diversity in this role. We are not expecting a miracle and don’t think we will find any individual with all these skills. If you are strong in at least 5 of them and have a sense of humour, it will get you an interview.

  • Superior Microsoft Office knowledge, in particular with Excel
  • Understanding of databases and a true appreciation for the beauty of keeping data accurate
  • Data entry
  • Data analysis experience that includes working with RAW data to build a masterful report in Excel
  • Experience with InDesign and Photoshop. Any experience with catalogue creation, graphic design or artistic skills are a bonus!
  • Digital photography skills
  • Basic networking experience: computers, printers, scanning, network cameras etc..
  • An understanding of telephony setup and programming
  • Computer hardware repair
  • Regular everyday IT tasks like software updates, installation, upgrades, working with firewalls, security software, troubleshooting in a Windows environment
  • Website maintenance, e-mail management and social media management
  • Ability to learn custom nursery software and hardware
  • Dealing with vendors, obtaining quotes, ordering products, negotiating.

Character Traits

  • Sense of humour and the ability to handle personal stress, even under pressure, even when answering the same question for the 100th time.
  • High attention to detail and a genuine keenness for accuracy and precision.
  • Flexibility, in learning new skills, in your working environment, in your teaching style.
  • An understanding and an appreciation for the fact that this is a unique working environment, tasks change significantly seasonally, we are affected by weather, it is a semi-rural location.
  • This job requires a certain level of humbleness due to the nature of the business and the environment we work in. It’s dusty, we don’t have a corporate budget, there are perks but they are non-traditional. We work with beautiful plants, we wear hiking boots and jeans, we have an office dog. The seasons really do change the scope of the job which helps keep it feeling fresh. Our staff is very diverse and it is essential that we work as a team, which makes for interesting interactions and lots of jokes.

We fully expect to train the right person, as much as the technical skills are necessary, the personality of the person we hire has to be right too. Be enthusiastic about learning, evolving, expanding your responsibilities, along with your skill set.

If you would like to be part of a fun, lively and hard working team that strives for excellence please send your resume in confidence to employment@kobesnurseries.com

Please note that while we appreciate your interest in Kobes Nurseries Inc., only those candidates who successfully meet our criteria will be contacted for an interview. We wish you all the best in your employment search!
